Sharing your Transformational Story with OPTAVIA on Social Media – Weight Loss and Health Claim Guidance

We are thrilled to have you share your journey and what you have achieved as part of our OPTAVIA Community. You are a powerful living example of how OPTAVIA can help change lives and you are an inspiration to others. We are so excited for you to share your transformational story and watch it resonate with others. In order to prepare for your story to be shared, we want to give you some best practices that will help keep your story compliant, while sharing.

Of course, when sharing, keep in mind that it is important to be truthful and accurate about your story. In addition, there are 2 specific areas that we want to direct your attention to 1)   weight-loss claims, and 2) health claims; for guidance on income and lifestyle claims, please reference the article on Sharing your Success with OPTAVIA on Social Media – Income Disclosure Guidance. As you tell your story, please abide by the below Dos and Don’ts in these 2 areas.

1. WEIGHT LOSS CLAIMS

✔ DO be truthful and accurate about your weight loss, your experience, and your story.

✔ DO talk about what dress size you have dropped to (if applicable).

✔  DO talk about how you feel about and your experience during your weight loss journey.

✔  When it comes to maintaining your weight, DO talk about healthy habits you learned from your Coach, for example:

  • “Once you lose the weight, your OPTAVIA Coach teaches you how to help keep it off.”
  • "Becoming an independent OPTAVIA Coach will not only enable you to help others on their optimal health journeys but will also help keep you accountable in maintaining your own healthy lifestyle.”
    • As will be discussed under the “Don’ts” section, please DON’T mention keeping your weight off for any specific period of time.

✔  DO use the appropriate weight loss disclaimer when sharing your weight loss testimonial (this includes any “after” photos, “sugar shots” or just sharing your weight loss in general), for example:

  • When only weight loss is mentioned, with no time frame (i.e., “I lost 50 pounds on the Optimal Weight 5&1 Plan.”), choose one of the following disclaimers:
    • Average weight loss on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 12 pounds;
    • Average weight loss on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 12 pounds. Average fat loss is 10 pounds; or
    • In a clinical study, the group on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® lost 10x more weight than the self-directed group. Average weight loss on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan is 12 pounds.

  • When weight loss is mentioned, along with a time frame (i.e., “I lost 50 pounds in 4 months on the Optimal Weight 5&1 Plan”), use only the following disclaimer:
    • Average weight loss on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 12 pounds. Clients are in weight loss, on average, for 12 weeks.

  • If planning to share the inches you lost around your waist, DO use the following disclaimer:
    • “Average decrease in waist circumference on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 2 inches.”
      • Please note, if your story includes weight loss AND inches lost around your waist, you must use the appropriate weight loss disclaimer (e.g., “Average weight loss on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 12 pounds.”), in addition to the following disclaimer that relates to the inches lost around your waist (e.g., “Average decrease in waist circumference on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 2 inches.”).

✖ DON’T mention total body inches lost (e.g., “I lost 40 inches around my body!”) or any other inches lost on the body (e.g., “I lost 6 inches on my thighs.”); currently, we can only support claims of inches lost around the waist, which requires the use of the following disclaimer, “Average decrease in waist circumference on the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan® is 2 inches.”

✖ DON’T mention weight-loss claims or guarantees, for example, “Lose 20 pounds!” or “Lose up to 20 pounds!” or “You can lose 20 pounds.”

✖ DON’T include specific time frames when referring to being able to maintain your weight loss. We are unfortunately unable to support claims of weight maintenance for any specific period of time. For         example, “I’ve kept my weight off for five years!”, “50 pounds lost for good!”, and “25 pounds lost forever!”

✖ DON’T mention weight loss on any plan other than the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan®. Weight loss can only be discussed in association with the Optimal Weight 5 & 1 Plan, as that is the only plan that we have clinical studies to support weight loss. If you would like to share your success with OPTAVIA outside of the 5 & 1 Plan (e.g., the Nursing Mothers Plan, 4, 2 & 1, 3 & 3, etc.), please only speak about your experience being on these Plans in general. Please DON’T mention weight loss or achieving a healthy weight on these other Plans.

2. HEALTH CLAIMS

✔ DO talk generally about the Habits of Health® and how they helped you get healthy.

✔ If applicable to you and truthful, DO talk about how losing weight helped improve certain health conditions noted below. We know that losing weight can have many different positive impacts on people’s health, however, there are only certain benefits that generally happen to people when they lose weight, not just by trying OPTAVIA. We refer to these general health conditions as the “Big 3.” The Big 3 are health claims that generally tend to improve due to weight loss and they are: 1) type 2 diabetes, 2) high cholesterol/triglycerides and 3) high blood pressure. Therefore, if any of these conditions personally apply to you, you can talk about how losing weight helped improve any of these 3 conditions, for example:

  • “Thanks to losing weight, my blood pressure has dropped.”
  • “Losing weight helped improve my type 2 diabetes.”
  • “Since I’ve lost weight, my cholesterol has gone down!”
    • As will be discussed under the “Don’ts” section, please DON’T mention specific “numbers” or specific improvements with these 3 conditions.

✖ DON’T talk about OPTAVIA or our products/programs (including the Habits of Health) curing, preventing, or treating any diseases. For example, “I no longer have sleep apnea!” “I’m no longer diabetic.”, “I don’t have to use a CPAP anymore.”, “I no longer have joint pain.” etc., or “OPTAVIA saved my life.”

✖ DON’T mention medication elimination or reduction, for example, “Since my parents lost weight with OPTAVIA, they are off all meds!”

✖ DON’T mention specific changes when it comes to the Big 3 health claims; as mentioned under the “Dos” you may only talk about improvements to the Big 3, as a result of your weight loss. You are not permitted to discuss specific improvements, for example, “My cholesterol dropped below 200.”, “My A1C has decreased to 5.1.”, or “My blood pressure is now normal.”

Finally, be sure to contact the OPTAVIA Compliance Team, compliance@OPTAVIA.com if you have any questions or concerns.
